Terry A. Karkela has been helping clients resolve their problems for more than 25 years. He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to help clients avoid and resolve problems both in and out of Court. In addition to his practice and trial experience, Terry has served as a mediator and arbitrator for other attorneys in real estate and commercial matters.

Terry is certified as a Real Property Specialist by the Minnesota State Bar Association and is a co-chair of the Minnesota State Bar Association's Real Property Certification Council. He also serves on both the Minnesota State Bar Association's Real Property Council and Legislative Committee. He has written articles for and has taught and lectured at several educational seminars for other lawyers and community groups.

Terry has been selected as a Super Lawyer by other lawyers in Minnesota, a recognition of his knowledge and skill in the practice of law. Terry has also received several awards for his service to his community and other organizations.

Professional Recognition and Associations:

Terry has been certified as a Real Property Specialist by the Minnesota State Bar Association since the certification program began and he currently serves as a co-chair of the certification program. Terry also serves on the Minnesota State Bar Association's Real Property Council and its Legislative Committee. Terry has previously served on a Minnesota Supreme Court Task Force and on the Minnesota Board of Legal Certification. He also received the Minnesota State Bar Association's Outstanding Professional Performance Award for his many years of service as a Perham High School Mock Trial Coach and he was recognized by other lawyers in Minnesota as a Super Lawyer. He is a member of the Otter Tail County, Seventh Judicial District and Minnesota State Bar Association.

Professional Presentations and Publications:
Terry has taught and written materials for several legal education seminars for other lawyers including the annual Real Estate Institute for Minnesota real estate lawyers. Terry has also presented educational seminars and written materials to church, seniors and other groups.

Community Involvement:
Terry has served his community as Mayor, Chair of the Economic Development Authority, Chair of the Housing and Redevelopment Authority and Chair of the Community Center Board. He has also served as Chair or as a member of numerous other community boards, committees and organizations. Terry has received several Leadership Awards from community organizations.

Family:
Terry and his wife, Mary, who is also active in the community, have two children and have been very involved with their children's lives and, as a family, they enjoy and participate in a wide range of outdoor and other activities.

NEWS:

Svingen, Karkela, Cline, Haugrud, Hunt, Larson & Jensen, PLLP is pleased to announce the addition of Jamison W. Cichosz as a partner, effective April 1, 2009. Mr. Cichosz will practice in the areas of criminal law, family law, workers’ compensation and general litigation.

Jamison W. Cichosz graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of St. Thomas in 1999 with degrees in both Business Administration and Spanish.  He then went on to graduate from the University of North Dakota School of Law in 2002 after which he moved to the Fergus Falls area.  Mr. Cichosz has been practicing in the areas of criminal law, family law and general litigation since being licensed.  

Mr. Cichosz has become active in the community since moving to Fergus Falls.  He is a two-time past commander at VFW Post 612 in Fergus Falls.  He has taught criminal law and criminal procedure at Minnesota State Community and Technical College in Fergus Falls.  He was the City Prosecutor between 2002 and 2007 and is currently a member of the Fergus Falls City Council.  For enjoyment, Mr. Cichosz coaches youth football and spends time with his family.


Sheila Harms was a featured speaker for the Career Day on April 3, 2009 hosted by the Pelican Rapids Chapter of Rotary.


J.J. Cline, Allen Haugrud, and Paul Hunt served as attorney coaches in the 2009 Minnesota High School Mock Trial Competition.  The Minnesota State Bar Association will recognize the more than 500 mock trial volunteers in the May/June issue of Bench & Bar.


Greg Larson has been selected for inclusion on the 2008 Minnesota Rising Stars list, featuring the top young lawyers in the state. Rising Stars is published in a special advertising section of the December 2007 issues of Minnesota Law & Politics, Twin Cities Business and Mpls/St. Paul Magazine. The list of Rising Stars also appears on the web at superlawyers.com.
